Towards the end of 2022, Wonder Woman Elgon had the opportunity to visit 4 secondary schools in Kaptama Ward (Mt. Elgon sub-county) and managed to engage with a total of 300 girls in matters Menstrual Health Management (MHM). The discussions revolved around available and accessible menstrual products, hygiene issues and sexual health. We took time to listen to them speak about the issues that affect them most as adolescent girls especially those that majorly contribute to teenage pregnancies, early marriages and school drop-outs. We ended the discussions with donations of reusable pads to the girls, made possible with support from Dutch Flower Foundation.
Key Learning Points:
1. Adolescent girls need more holistic support
2. Many adolescent girls lack basic information menstrual health management and SRH in general.
3. Adolescent girls lack parental support and mentors who can relate to them.
We visit the same schools again this year to follow-up on the progress of the girls in school and on their thoughts about reusable menstrual products. We look forward to more interaction and engagement with the girls!
